The Civil Service Office for the City of Zanesville is now accepting applications for the position of Waste Water Plant Operator/Operator in Training. This exam is open for consideration to all qualified and interested employees and to the general public who possess a State of Ohio Wastewater Plant Operator's License or the possibility of obtaining a State of Ohio Wastewater Plant Operator's License.
Position is eligible for a $2080 annual bonus for a Class II Wastewater Certification and a $4680 annual bonus for a Class III Wastewater Certification.
A minimum of a State of Ohio Class I Wastewater Plant Operator's License is required for this position and must be obtained as part of employment. Applicant must also be insurable under the City's insurance policy.
Position Qualifications
An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is: high school degree, GED or equivalent and possession of State of Ohio Class I Operator in Wastewater Treatment Certification. Demonstrable knowledge of wastewater treatment safety standards and practices. Willingness to work the floater shift.
Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition ofemployment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
Licensure or Certification Requirements
State of Ohio Certificate as a Class I Operator in Wastewater Treatment. or the ability to obtain a Class 1 Operator License in Wastewater Treatment within 24 months of hire. State motor vehicle operator's license.
Distinguishing Job Characteristics
Under general supervision, operates the City's wastewater treatment plant. Works a combination of shifts including floater shift, swing shift, 3rd shift, 2nd shift, and/or 1st shift.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operates and makes adjustments to plant operating processes. Monitors and maintains pumps, valves, telescopic valves, gas detection units, bar screens and conveyors, methane gas collection equipment, heat exchangers and other wastewater treatment plant equipment.
Processes sludge and dehydrates to make ready for land application. Monitors all processes and reports operatingproblems.
Collects plant samples and runs analytical tests. Checks and records pH, DO, CL2 and interprets data for adjustingplant operating processes.
Performs routine cleaning and minor maintenance of all buildings and grounds.
Oils, greases and performs other routine maintenance to wastewater treatment equipment.
Confers with the general public regarding sewer system problems and needed services, and dispatches request forwork crews.
Checks wastewater plant on a daily basis by visual observation and reports findings to supervisors.
Records plant readings and digester temperatures. Completes concentrated sludge record and chart, analytical records, maintenance logs and waste haulers records. Completes daily operator's log on an hourly basis during assigned shift.

Occasionally operates gas detection units; tripods and SCBA's.

Working Conditions
Occasional exposure to heat, cold, dampness, smells, noise, chemicals, dirt, and dust. Consistent exposure to fumes. The employee must use standard safety precautions due to exposure to chemicals, chlorine, sulfur dioxide & other gases and bacteria, and exposure to injury from operation of equipment.

General Information
Applicants must submit an electronic application by the deadline date. Proof of possession of a State of Ohio License inWastewater must be submitted with the application. All applications will then be reviewed by the Civil ServiceCommission to determine whether applicant has met the required qualifications. Applicant will be notified regarding theoutcome of the review.
The Civil Service Examination for Wastewater Plant Operator will consist of a written examination. Applicants mustattain a passing score of 70 % to proceed. Score plus any seniority points will determine your rank on the eligibility list if applicable.
