Job Summary: The Division of Solid Waste Management Operator/Clerk performs both landfill field operations and administrative office functions. This position directs and manages waste drop-off activities, operates heavy equipment and commercial vehicles, hauls and processes waste materials, and oversees landfill maintenance. Additionally, the role weighs and tracks incoming loads, processes payments, maintains financial and operational records, and provides customer service to the public.
This position serves as a cross-trained team member capable of rotating between equipment operation and office responsibilities to ensure efficient daily landfill operations.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
- Always do the right thing and consistently demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and the County's mission, values, and safety standards
- Direct incoming waste to appropriate working areas and monitor landfill conditions to ensure safe, compliant operations
- Operate and maintain heavy equipment for compaction, grading, material movement, and sorting of recyclable materials and scrap metals
- Hook and unhook containers from compactors and tarp containers; haul waste to the transfer station and unload containers
- Construct and maintain temporary landfill roads
- Assist with recycling, E-Waste, and other County support programs
- Weigh vehicles entering and exiting the landfill and accurately track loads using landfill software
- Process payments (cash, credit card, and check) and maintain accountability by balancing the cash drawer
- Prepare daily revenue and tonnage reports and maintain accurate financial and operational records
- Provide customer service to residents and contractors, answering questions regarding landfill policies, fees, and procedures
- Communicate operational updates effectively with landfill staff
Job Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum 2 years' experience operating heavy equipment and commercial trucks
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B
- Solid Waste certifications (or ability to obtain within required timeframe)
- 6-12 months of customer service, clerical, or cash-handling experience
- Ability to operate Point of Sale systems and landfill tracking software
- Mechanical aptitude and basic computer proficiency
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions
Physical Demands/Special Work Environment:
- Works in both field and office environments with varying physical demands
- Frequently operates heavy equipment and commercial vehicles
- Traverses uneven outdoor terrain in all weather conditions
- Exposed to moving mechanical parts, vibration, dust, wind, rain, snow, and heat
- Lifts up to 60 pounds in field settings and up to 25 pounds occasionally in office settings
- Ascends and descends steps and ladders
- Requires strong spatial awareness and sound safety judgment
- Performs frequent computer work involving repetitive hand and finger movements
- Requires close visual acuity for data entry and reporting
- Stands for up to 40% of the workday
- Frequently communicates with the public and co-workers
